Mermaids have been spotted in Tarifa on the south coast of Spain.
Tarifa is one of Spain’s top whale watching destinations and the Isla de las Palomas (or Tarifa Island) where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic is a great diving and freediving spot.
No mermaids had ever been seen in the South of Spain though, until now…
Now in pools from Tarifa to Estepona, mermaids are teaching children to swim as only young mermaids (or mermen) can with a colourful monofin tail, collecting plastic waste to keep the sea clean.
This fun eco-educational initiative is the idea of Susana and María from Alma de Sirena in Tarifa.
The two mermaids tell a story of ages, a wonderful watery world that became littered with plastic. They show aspiring young mermaids and mermen how to use their hands (and tails) to help keep their watery world plastic-free.
Aspiring mermaids and mermen:
- need just a bathing costume and towel to participate
- must be age 7 or older and be able to swim independently.
Activities last approximately 1 ½ hours
- No adults; eco-educational fun for young mer-people
- Insurance, equipment and SSI Try Mermaid certificate included
- All activities SSI (Scuba Schools International) certified
